After reviewing the readings, I now understand how the three concepts of critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and employee engagement are implemented when supervising others. I also believe that one is not more significant because managers can apply all three principles in the workplace. However, if I had to pick one, I would go with emotional intelligence since it is critical to observe when supervising others. According to Landry (2019), emotional intelligence is the ability to control and express emotions and manage interpersonal relations wisely and empathetically. In a managerial role, supervisors will be exposed to various emotions from their employees, such as happiness, anger, and sadness. Hence, empathy, along with emotional intelligence, is a valuable characteristic to possess.

I also learned that four different feelings are significant in emotional intelligence. Recognizing emotions is the first step in correctly comprehending someone’s feelings. Someone’s body language or facial expressions may give away whether they are happy, sad, or angry in some instances. Furthermore, the supervisor can employ positive thinking and cognitive activity when reasoning with emotions. Additionally, employees gain from emotional intelligence since it allows them to recognize their strengths and weaknesses better. As a result, people with high emotional intelligence can benefit from constructive criticism while also being aware of their capabilities.

We are in charge of our emotions and react to things; responding with emotion will attract attention. Understanding someone’s feelings is the third step, as previously mentioned. Therefore, managers can interpret people’s emotions as furious, sad, or happy, depending on the situation. Thus as an outsider, we must first study the individual to understand why they feel this way. Whether you are angry, it could be because of something that happened at work or something on your way to work. The fourth step is to control your emotions. The ability to effectively understand emotions is a crucial component of emotional intelligence.

Analyzing, comprehending, applying, and evaluating knowledge is critical thinking. Organizations can improve a person’s method of thinking by placing intellectual standards on the structures they already have (The Foundation of Critical Thinking n.d). A supervisor may be affected by this since how can you handle any problem that develops in the workplace if you can’t communicate? Problem-solving is one of the talents that a supervisor should possess since it will allow employees to approach their supervisor when a problem arises.

When faced with a problem at work, a supervisor who has developed a form of critical thinking should analyze the situation by asking questions and asking them. Two, acquire sufficient knowledge relevant to the circumstance and devise a solution. Third, keep an open mind and avoid making assumptions. Finally, efficient communication with employees is essential, as is employee engagement.

Employee engagement, according to Forbes, is described as an employee’s emotional tie to the organization and its goals. Additionally, employee engagement also impacts supervisors’ experiences, as it is their responsibility to make employees feel invested in the company. Therefore, this will impact subordinates; the employee may lose interest in the company unless the boss lacks empathy. An organization can give all of the essential tools for its employees. However, if they are unhappy, they may decide to quit, negatively affecting them.
